Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.
We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like standard physical horror, but within Together resides a deep meditation about our choices in loving our partners.
An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities
Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The plot commences when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.
Nuanced Portrayals
A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He dreads the concept of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.
The couple grapple with the sort of issues that arise in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
